History of the Department

CMVFR Renovation In Progress On July 01, 2000 Crowders Mountain Volunteer Fire & Rescue, Inc. came into existence by a merger of two (2) long established volunteer fire departments and a long established rescue squad. The fire departments were Chapel Grove VFD, established in 1963, which covered the south western parts of Gaston County from their station located at 111 Camp Rotary Road, Gastonia. Having five (5) pieces of apparatus, two (2) Engines, a Tanker, a Utility unit and two (2) Brush units the station ran calls in their district as well as assisting Gastonia City Fire, South Gastonia VFD, Union Road VFD, and Rhyne VFD and had approximately 70 members.

The other department was South Gastonia VFD established in 1962, which covered the southern and extreme southwestern area of Gaston County from their station on York Highway. Having seven (7) pieces of apparatus Two (2) Engines, a Tanker, a Rescue/ Command unit, a Brush unit and a Utility unit the station ran calls in their district as well as assisting Gastonia City Fire, Chapel Grove VFD, Union Road VFD and Clover VFD in South Carolina as needed. The station had approximately 80 members.

CMVFR Completed Renovation The other department involved was Bessemer City Rescue Squad established in 1976 which covered an EMS/Rescue District that ran from north of Bessemer City near Tryonota VFD eastward to the Gastonia City Limits and south to the NC/Sc State line in the western areas of Chapel Grove VFD and South Gastonia VFD areas. They covered the area with a three (3) pieces of apparatus, a Crash/ Rescue truck and two (2) ambulances from their last station located at 215 East Virginia Avenue and covered their primary district plus assisted as needed by directed by Gaston County EMS dispatch. The calls they ran were basic emergency medical calls, rescue calls including motor vehicle accidents as well as any other type of rescue calls.

With all the apparatus, members, and years of experience Crowders Mountain VF&R, Inc. had a very big jump start into the area to be covered which was covering both fire and the medical district covered the entire west southwest and southern areas of Gaston County, from 321 to the Cleveland County line to the areas north and northwest of Bessemer City, NC. The department started out with approximately 100 members on day one (1) and was running from the three stations that the departments had previously been dispatched from.

CMVFR History In July, 2006 the department moved out of the three stations into two (2), they were the newly renovated station at 215 East Virginia Avenue, Bessemer City, NC, which housed two Fire Engines, a Brush Unit and the EMS ambulances and Crash/ Rescue unit. This station will cover the entire Ems/Rescue District and the northern end of the fire district from this station. This station would also assist other nearby fire districts as dispatched by county fire. The other station was newly built station located at 480 Bethany Road, Gastonia, NC, which housed three (3) Fire Engines, one (1) Rescue/ Command unit and two (2) Brush units. This station covers the rest of the Crowders Mountain Fire District as well as assisting other nearby fire districts as dispatched by Gaston County Fire.
